Government Data Center

Print PDF

The Government of Kenya through the Directorate of e-Government has built a Government Data Centre (GDC) for processing and storage of Government applications and data. The Data Centre is connected to the Government Common Core Network (GCCN) that has networked Government Ministries, departments and agencies. The GDC implementation was started in late 2008 and was commissioned in February 2011 and is now ready to host Government systems and services.

The objectives of developing the Government data center is to:-

  • Save costs by eliminating the need for high infrastructure expenses and also provide an easy to use, cost efficient, flexible, dynamic and secure environment for   Government data and information.
  • Cater for the increasing storage and processing needs within the Government;
  • Reduce the ever increasing power consumption within the silos of the data centers at the Ministries/Departments/Agencies level;
  • Promote efficiency in the management of the servers and data centers across Government;
  • Ensure the security of the Government information is harmonized and managed centrally
  • For optimal use of the human capacity

The Data Centre has been implemented under an Enterprise Architecture combining data warehousing, reengineered processes as well as virtualized technologies. The hardware architecture adds up to the latest hardware components that can only be found in very few institutions in Kenya.The specifications of the current infrastructure is upgradable and is  capable of handling all the Government and key agencies processes at minimal utilization for the next couple of years.
